The one camera to rule them all
As I was up at Copper mountain this weekend, doing a little snowboarding, I was reminded how good this camera is. I have several cameras so I do not "miss anything" but the problem is I never have them when needed. I bought a good Canon (to big), and Evo cell phone (ran out of battery) and this camera. I had it out in the wind and the cold taking video and pictures all day and still had half a battery. It is water resistant, has a flash and is 5MP to boot. I dropped it in the snow last year and did not even miss a beat and at $50 it a hard deal to pass up.
John Muir
So as I was driving in the mountains today I started to think about John Muir. For those who don't know who Muir is here is a little bit about the man who devoted the later part of his life to the preservation of the Western forests.
Muir was born on April 21, 1838 in Scotland. In 1849 the family emigrated to the United States and settled in Portage, Wisconsin. In 1868 Muir arrived in San Francisco and immediately headed to Yosemite for a week-long visit. He instantly fell in love with the place. To make a long story short, his activism helped save the Yosemite Vally, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The well known Sierra Club was founded by Muir. Muir was responsible for the National Park Bill, passed in 1899, that established both Yosemite and Sequoia National Park.
So next time your in a National Park or just looking for the definition of recreation in the outdoors, take a little time to think about the man who is known as the "Father of the National Parks".
The Perfect Gift For A Cribbage Player
If your looking to get a gift for that cribbage player in your life, here it is. REI offers cribbage boards that outdoor person. I own the summit trail one and it is by far my most favorite board to use. It measures 11" X 9" X 4" and weighs 4.5 pounds. The price on this is $50 and well worth it. They also have a snowboard, which I'm hoping to get for Christmas, a toboggan, and a kayak. These boards are $30 and would make the perfect gift. All the cribbage boards are made for 2 players. With such great detail put into these, I am proud to display mine in the front room of my house for everyone to see. Click on the picture to the right to be taken to the REI page to check out all the boards. The definition of recreation to us is beer and a crib game.

Outdoor Etiquette & Stewardship
Just a reminder about outdoor ethics. We were given the gift of the great outdoors. They were not put here for us to demolish and destroy. If we take the extra time and effort to take care of nature it will last for generations to come. Always remember the practice of leave no trace. If you see some trash, pick it up. Some people just don't really care and think that one piece of trash left on the ground is not a big deal. Well it is. If we all did that the world would be one large landfill. Pack out more than what you packed in, not the opposite. Toss a trash bag or zip lock in you backpack and use it to stow the small pieces of trash that mysteriously show up in places they shouldn't be. If we all pitch in a little then we can conquer the ones who don't care. If we include this in the definition of recreation then we can keep the earth beautiful for our children and teach them to pass on the practice to their children and the generations to come.
