Trout Fishing Colorado

For Trout fishing Colorado has a lot to offer. You can take a hike into the mountains and do some fly fishing for the native cutthroat or dunk some salmon eggs on the edge of the lake while drinking a beer. It just matters how you want to spend your day. I love to fish anyway I can, no one way is better than another. One thing to keep in mind is if you're going to keep the fish to eat or release them. If you’re fishing for fun (catch and release) consider crimping the barb or use a single snelled hook. This will allow you to remove the hook easier.

Here are some of the techniques I use to catch trout in a lake.

Salmon Eggs

Pautzke's Salmon Eggs

The first method for catching trout in a lake is to fish with salmon eggs on the bottom. My preferred brand for salmon eggs is Pautzke's Premium Balls O' Fire Salmon Eggs, they seem to last longer in the tackle box. Bait these on the hook so they cover all of the metal. I use a snelled hook which has line pre-tied to the hook. Attach this to a swivel and add drop weight of about 3/16 to 1/4 of an ounce. Cast the line as far as you can and reel in the slack. You will want to have your pole upright so you can watch the tip. As the trout takes the eggs you will see the tip of your rod twitch. Slowly reel in the line until you get a hard pull. Set the hook and bring in your fish.
